Raiders QB Gardner Minshew spoke with Barstool Sports recently and shared his plan to get a medical redshirt in order to gain another year of college football eligibility.
Minshew had transferred to ECU in 2017, but there were two starting QB's in front of him on the depth chart that left him with very little playing time.
He felt like he was wasting a year of NCAA eligibility and came-up with a plan to get one back - he would break his hand with a hammer.
After a week-3 game which he played one half of football due to injuries at the QB position, Minshew was relegated back to the bench for the teams' game the following week. He felt like his time was being wasted on the bench.
He went home after the week-4 game to put his plan to work.
He sat down at a table with a bottle of Jack Daniels and a hammer.
A whack off the bottle and then a whack with the hammer on the back of his hand.
It hurt but he could tell it wasn't broken.
Another whack off the bottle and another whack with the hammer. Still not broken.
A couple more big gulps and another whack to his shaking hand with the hammer. There was pain but he could tell it wasn't broken. That's all he had in him as far as his attempt at a broken hand.
He went on to start four games at the end of the season after telling his coach he had closed his hand in a car door to explain the swollen hand.
He never did get the medical redshirt and played one more season of college ball after transferring to Washington State for his season year.
He went 11-3 that year and was then drafted by the Jaguars in the sixth round of the 2019 NFL draft.
